CHAPTER 15

As Alexander had every night since Serenity had started sleeping beside him, he stared down at the beautiful woman in his arms.

And his whole body ached for her.

He wanted to roll her beneath him, make her beg for him, then quench both of their needs.

Given how passionate and responsive she was, it wouldn’t be that difficult.

Maybe she was correct. Maybe his father had been responsible for what had happened to his wives.

Or not.

The only ones who knew were no longer there to tell him the truth.

Alexander stroked Serenity’s hair as he held her. She was so beautiful. So kind. She made his chest ache.

And she loved him.

Was that even possible? She had told him so, and she was a terrible liar. She would probably tell him again. He hoped she would.

But did he love her? Could the son of a monster ever love? If he did take her, give in to the physical need between them, would he be as selfish as his father?

Alexander didn’t know.

A part of him wanted to shove her away, to bury himself in the business of the duchy and seeing his siblings settled with families of their own.

To protect Serenity and himself.

Another part of him wanted to be lying in front of the fire with his infant son or daughter asleep on his chest and Serenity curled up beside him.

He remembered when his siblings had been young, and he’d given them rides on his shoulders. How delighted Elise had been when she’d figured out she could reach the top of the door frame from his shoulders.

He’d taught them all how to dance, even Leo. And he’d taught them to ride. The four of them had spent long days racing across the Norchester lands, having picnics in the afternoon sunshine, or swimming in the streams.

To have a second chance at that, but this time without the omnipresent fear. The bruises. The sleepless nights as all of his siblings had come and slept in his room while he had stood guard.

Alexander balled his fists.

He still despised his father.

But no matter what he did, Alexander would always be Lord Gareth Kentworth’s son.

And not everything about Lord Gareth had been evil. The duchy had thrived under him. He’d had a sharp and shrewd mind. Was cunning. Brilliant in some ways. Ruthless in others.

But through it all had run a streak of violence.

A streak Alexander had seen in himself more than once.

But he would never hurt those he loved.

And it hurt both him and Serenity to force the physical separation, to not allow her the chance at the children she wanted.

That they both wanted.

And he needed to improve her education, particularly if they returned to London to help Camilla select a suitor. While married, Serenity was far less knowledgeable and experienced than she needed to be to fend off the rakes of the ton. Rakes that would see her as a prime target now that she was married.

He wasn’t certain how he’d respond if one of them took advantage of her, or worse yet, hurt her.
